After the diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis life is devastating. After years of mainstream and alternative treatments people need to learn how to manage the disease and live within limitations. This is not easy for an A type personality who thrived on stress and activity! Realizing accurate knowledge would empower us, I researched numerious books and scientific studies on Autoimmune diseases. One book stood out: "Extraordinary Healing" by Art Brownstein, M.D. I became proactive in health care and though to help others. Autoimmune diseases are especially challenging because they're chronic with no cure, while the cause remains a mystery. Remission with drug therapy is possible, but many can't endure the side effects or dangers. To deal successfully with Chronic Illness we need emotional support from family, friends, our peers and compassionate doctors to assist us with our healing systems. Through knowledge and practice we can make a difference in our health.

IgG galactosylation the relevant factor for pregnancy-induced remission of rheumatoid arthritis

During pregnancy, most patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience spontaneous improvement of their disease activity. Among the soluble candidates that have been investigated in search for the most relevant disease-remitting factor are the galactosylation levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG). In RA, a higher percentage of IgG lacking the terminal galactose residues, thought to play a pro-inflammatory role, is found. During pregnancy, however, IgG galactosylation levels increase and correlate with improved disease activity. The question remains whether the increase in IgG galactosylation during pregnancy is a mere epiphenomenon or a true remission-inducing factor.

A Possible New Phase For Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

The pathology of rheumatoid arthritis within the first few months after symptom onset is distinct from that of the early phases of other inflammatory joint diseases and also of established rheumatoid arthritis. New research published today in Arthritis Research & Therapy found that very early rheumatoid arthritis is characterised by a distinct profile of T cell, macrophage and stromal cell related cytokines in synovial fluid. This finding of a distinct phase of rheumatoid arthritis, immediately after the onset of clinical symptoms, provides a new rationale for the very early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis - before the disease develops into a long-term condition.
